Drunk pilot jailed for 6 months

A pilot has been jailed after he was so drunk at London's Heathrow airport he could not remember where he was flying to when asked by security officials.

The Daily Telegraph reported that George La Perle, 49, who flew for Delta Airlines, has been sentenced to six months in prison for attempting to fly after drinking.

Sentencing him on Friday, Judge Phillip Matthews said: “The consequences for the passengers on that plane, if you had piloted for any stage of that journey, which was a distinct possibility bearing in mind that is what you were employed to do, were potentially catastrophic.”

La Perle was stopped by security officers on Nov. 11th last year because he was reeking of alcohol, Isleworth Crown Court said.

He told them he had just had a few beers the previous evening but the stink was suspicious.

When the security staff asked him where he was going, he told them that he was flying to New York. But his actual destination was Detroit.

Boeing 767, scheduled to fly Nov 11, 2010, had up to 241 passengers to the U.S.

The following alcohol test found him to be four and a half times the alcohol limit.

Heidi Stonecliffe, prosecutor at the Isleworth Crown Court, said there could have been "extremely dangerous and potentially disastrous consequences".

It was found out later in trial that he had a long history of alcohol crimes.

Back in September, a Delta pilot was removed from a flight in Amsterdam after it was found that he, too, was drunk.

술 취한 조종사 징역 6개월

런던 히드로 공항에서 만취한 상태로 보잉 항공기를 운전하려다 잡힌 조종사가 결국 징역을 살게 됐다.

조지 라 펄이라는 이름의 델타항공 소속 조종사가 징역 6개월을 선고받았다고 데일리 텔레그래프 외신이 24일 보도했다.

금요일, 법원은 선고재판에서 “만취사건이 난 당일 조종사가 항공기를 몰았다면 참사가 날 가능성이 높았다.”며 이같이 판결했다.

잔뜩 술에 취한 그가 겁도 없이 비행기 조종석에 앉겠다고 나선 건 지난해 11월 1일.. 그는 술 냄새를 풍기며 비행기에 타려다 안전요원들에게 잡혔다.

그는 “전날 맥주를 몇 잔 마셨을 뿐”이라고 주장했지만 짙은 술 냄새는 과음을 의심하게 했다.

”어디로 가느냐.” 는 안전요원들이 던진 질문에 그는 “뉴욕으로 간다.”고 당당히 답했다. 하지만 그 답이 그에겐 스스로 채운 족쇄가 됐다.

그가 조종대를 잡기로 한 보잉 767 항공기는 승객 241명을 태우고 디트로이트로 날아갈 예정이었다.

이어 실시된 음주측정에서 혈중알코올농도는 허용치의 4.5배로 나왔다.

문제의 조종사를 기소한 검찰은 “비행기가 이륙하기 전 과음한 사실이 드러나지 않았다면 극도로 위험한 비행이 됐을 것이고, 참사가 빚어졌을 수 있다.”며 징역을 구형했다.

재판 과정에선20년 경력의 베테랑 조종사인 그가 긴 음주전력을 갖고 있는 것으로 드러났다.

작년 9월 앰스터뎀에서도 델타의 한 조종사가 만취한 채 조종하려던 일이 있었다.
