Fish with human teeth discovered
Angler Frank Yarborough, 40, was very surprised to see a monstrous fish with teeth similar with human being’s when it was reeled out of water at night at Lake Wylie in South Carolina.
The flat fish, 50cm in length and 2.3kg in weight, has left teeth marks on the angler’s thumb.
As he angled at the lake for years, he knew very well what kinds of fishes live there and was sure the monster came out of the lake.
"This fish is more than likely a common species of Pacu, Colossama macropomum, originating from the Amazon River basin of South America and is quite common in the aquarium trade," said Robert Stroud, a fish biologist for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, after looking closely at the fish closely.
“They looked as though the fish had chewed tobacco all its life,” Stroud added, pointing out its yellowish teeth.
Biologists assume someone brought the fish caught somewhere else into the lake. They said the fish is not a native species of Lake Wylie.
In an interview with the local media, Stroud said it’s the first time such a fish has been caught in the area. He also said the lake is inadequate as the habitat of the fish.
The samples from the fish have been sent off to Charleston and to Florida to determine further if the fish is really Pacu.
Still not clearly identified, the fish is currently kept in the freezer at Yarborough’s place.

미국에서 낚시꾼들을 깜짝 놀라게 한 무시무시한 괴물 물고기가 등장해 화제를 모으고 있다.
사우스캐롤라이나의 한 호수에서 낚시를 하던 프랭크는 갑자기 물속에서 튀어 오른 물고기에 등을 세게 물린 뒤 놀라움을 감추지 못했다.
그를 물어 뜯은 물고기는 몸길이 50㎝가 넘고 무게가 2.3㎏에 달했다. 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 사람의 치아를 닮은 이빨.
오랫동안 낚시를 즐겨온 프랭크는 이 물고기가 메기과일 것이라고 추측한다. 특히 폭이 넓고 납작해서 사람의 치아를 연상시키는 이빨은 일반 물고기에게서 좀처럼 찾아보기 어려운 것이라고 말했다.
반면 사우스캐롤라이나 천연자원부의 생물학자인 로버트 스트로우드 박사는 이 물고기를 살핀 뒤 "남미산 파쿠의 일종으로 보인다."는 소견을 내놓았다.
아마존 강에서 주로 서식하는 것으로 알려진 파쿠는 살아있는 것을 먹이로 잡아먹는 파라미와 비슷하게 생겼으며, 따뜻한 물에서 산다.
스트로우드 박사는 현지 언론과 한 인터뷰에서 "파쿠는 사우스캐롤라이나지역에서 단 한번도 발견된 적이 없는 물고기이며, 서식환경도 일치하지 않는다."면서 "해당 물고기가 파쿠라고 확정지을 수 없기 때문에 더 자세한 조사가 필요하다."고 설명했다.
한편 정체가 밝혀지지 않은 이 물고기는 낚시꾼의 집에 산 채로 냉동돼 보관중이다.
