Are you interested in becoming the first resident on Mars?

Soon people will travel to the other planets to visit their relatives.

The U.S. space agency NASA is currently on the Hundred Years Starship, project of exploring new habitable planets and helping people settle down there.

If the settlers succeed in making another planet such as Mars their home, it will become one of the most revolutionary events in the history.

However, making such a decision would take time since hardly there will be a return flight to Earth because of the cost. Although the living supplies for the settlers would be sent from Earth, taking a risk of exchanging life for dream is tough.

NASA Ames Director Pete Worden said Ames, one of the NASA’s main research centers, has been funded with about $1.6 million to set off the project.

The research team has also received an additional support of $100,000 from NASA.

“The human space program is now really aimed at settling other worlds. Twenty years ago you had to whisper that in dark bars and get fired,” said Worden at ‘Long Conversation,’ an event in San Francisco. “We also hope to inveigle some billionaires to form a Hundred Year Starship fund.”

Currently Worden is in the middle of a negotiation with Google co-founder Larry Page on the cost of one-way trip to Mars. The cost changes depending on how far Mars is from Earth in its orbit around the sun, and the distance varies between 34 million and 250 million miles.

According to experts, a nuclear-fuelled rocket would make the time needed for the trip as short as about four months.

Until recently, no one has dared coming up with an idea of actually living on Mars. However, assumed to have a substantial amount of water, Mars is probably most habitable out of all the planets in the solar system.

Scientists Dirk Schulze-Makuch and Paul Davies wrote in the Journal of Cosmology four volunteer astronauts will be sent to the Red Planet on the first mission. Although the astronauts would be provided supplies from Earth on a regular basis, they are expected to stand by themselves as early as possible.

These four volunteers would head Mars with the same spirit the white settlers of North America once carried on their first voyage to a new world.

이 프로젝트를 시작하기 위해 160만 달러가 투입되었고 연구팀은 나사로부터 10만 달러를 지원받았다.

나사 에임스 연구소는 현재 구글과 화성으로 가는 편도 비행 액수에 대한 협상을 벌이고 있는 중이다. 이 액수는 화성이 태양을 선회하는 과정에서 지구와 얼마나 멀리 떨어져 있는가에 달려 있으며 거리는 3400만 마일에서 2억5천만 마일까지 달라질 수 있다.

처음에는 4명의 지원자들이 화성으로 가 거주를 시작할 것이며 그때마다 필요한 생필품들을 지구에서 보내 줄 것이다. 그러나 이들은 곧 자존적으로 살아가는 법을 터득해야 할 것이다.
