Six-figure salary with no college degree
Is a college degree required to earn a high salary in the U.S.? Fortunately, for those without one, the answer is no.
CNN Money used reports from PayScale.com to introduce six jobs that do not need a college degree and yet top performers earn more than $100,000 a year. PayScale owns the largest database of online employee salary data in the world.
Fire chief
Top pay: $121,000
Median pay: $72,900
In order to rise to the position, many years of fire fighting are required. Competition for the job is also intense and there are young chiefs who have received college education. However, the job only requires a high school degree.
“So much is based on your leadership skills and your management skills and not necessarily whether you have a degree,” said Vail, Colorado Fire Chief Mark Miller. “Anything can happen. You try to manage what is within your control.”
According to Miller, the reward from the job comes when he saves someone’s life, not the high salary.
Air traffic controller
Top pay: $159,000
Median pay: $83,000
The job does not require a college degree but people need to complete a training program at a Federal Aviation Administration facility in Oklahoma City.
The job requires vigilant concentration as one small mistake can lead to the death of hundreds of lives. However, Jim Marinitti, an air traffic controller at Miami International Airport said he loved his job because it was different every day. That keeps the work interesting.
Nuclear power reactor manager
Top pay: $128,000
Median pay: $86,200
People usually start as equipment operators and after years of training, get certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and become nuclear power reactor managers. The main task they perform is monitoring the operating system and check for technical failures.
Many find it very stressful because of the long 12-hour shift and many technical demands that need attention. However, Dale Atkinson, a nuclear power reactor manager at Energy Northwest in Richland, Washington, said he felt proud of his job.
“Putting the main generator on and seeing it produce energy is an enormous feeling of accomplishment.”
Director of security
Top pay: $123,000
Median pay: $68,700
Brad Bonnell, director of security for the InterContinental Hotels Group, said that there were a variety of jobs he and his team did. Those include evicting a guest, confronting with belligerent guests, or even evacuating a hotel because of a fire or bomb threat.
He also mentioned that a past career as a police officer or soldier was better than a college degree.
Competition for high security jobs is very fierce and the work environment can be dangerous.
Elevator mechanic
Top pay: $109,000
To become an elevator mechanic, one must finish a four-year apprenticeship with a local union. However, one must be aware that it might be difficult to enter into the union.
The job can be dangerous and difficult. The mechanics are exposed to heights, electricity, and dangerous machinery. They also must be on call 24/7, another downside to the job.
Court reporter
Top pay: $105,000
Median pay: $57,200
Court reporters transcribe spoken or recorded speech into written form. They must be able to transcribe 250 words per minute. An average person transcribes 30-40 words. Some states require a license, but no college degree is required.
Therefore, training from technical schools or the National Court Reporters Association is the only thing required for the job.

소방대장, 항공관제사, 원자로 관리사, 시설물 보안책임자, 엘리베이터 정비사, 법정 속기사. 이 직업들의 공통점은 미국에서 대학졸업장이 없어도 억대 연봉을 받을 수 있다는 점이다.
12일 CNN머니는 페이스케일닷컴(PayScale.com)의 분석을 인용, 굳이 대학을 가지 않고도 연소득이 10만달러가 넘는 직업군들을 소개했다.
◇소방대장= 연봉 평균이 7만2900달러(한화 8500만원)에 최고 연봉은 12만1000달러(1억4000만원) 수준이다.
장기간에 걸쳐 현장 소방관으로 활동해야 오를 수 있는 자리이며 이 때문에 대장으로 승진하는데 경쟁이 매우 치열하다. 대학을 졸업한 비교적 젊은 소방관이 대장으로 승진하는 경우도 없지는 않다.
그러나 소방대장에게 필요한 덕목은 학위가 아니라 리더십과 관리능력이다. 높은 연봉보다는 귀중한 생명을 구해냈을 때 느끼는 뿌듯한 자부심이 더 큰 보상이다.
◇항공관제사= 평균 연봉은 8만3700달러(9800만원), 최고연봉 15만9000달러(1억8500만원).
미국에서 항공관제사가 되려면 대학학위가 필요한 것은 아니지만 오클라호마에 있는 연방항공청의 교육시설에서 혹독한 직업훈련을 이수해야한다.
항공관제사는 한순간의 실수가 수백명이 목숨을 잃을 수 있는 대형 참사로 이어지기 때문에 매 순간 고도의 긴장이 요구되는 직업이다.
◇원자로 관리사= 평균 연봉 8만6200달러(1억원), 최고 연봉 12만8000달러(1억4900만원).
원전 설비운영 기사로 출발해 수년간의 직무훈련을 거쳐 원자력감독위원회의 인증을 받으면 원자로 관리사가 될 수 있다. 원전의 오작동 방지를 위해 가동상황을 모니터하는 것이 주임무다. 12시간 교대로 근무하기 때문에 육체적으로 힘들고 스트레스가 적지 않다.
◇시설물 보안책임자= 평균 연봉 6만8700달러(8000만원), 최고 연봉 12만2700달러(1억4300만원).
인터컨티넨털호텔 그룹의 보안책임자인 브래드 보넬은 말썽을 일으키는 고객을 내쫓거나 폭력적인 방문자와 맞서는 일, 화재나 폭발물 위협에 대응해 투숙객을 대피시키는 일이 주임무다.
전직 경찰관이나 군인이라는 경력이 대학졸업장보다 훨씬 더 유용한 직업이다. 승진 경쟁이 치열하며 매일 위험에 노출돼 있는 근무환경이다.
◇엘리베이터 정비사= 평균 연봉 7만2900달러(8500만원), 최고 연봉 10만9000달러(1억2700만원).
엘리베이터 지역노조에서 4년간의 직업훈련을 거치면 정비사가 될 수 있다. 지역에 따라서는 지역노조에 가입하는 것이 극히 어려운 경우도 있다.
고층에서 위험한 기기와 전기에 노출된 작업환경에서 일해야 한다. 고장신고가 들어오면 밤이건 새벽이건 언제라도 달려가야 한다는 것이 단점이다.
◇법정 속기사= 평균연봉 5만7200달러(6700만원), 최고 연봉 10만5000달러(1억2200만원).
속기 전문학원이나 전미속기사협회 등에서 훈련을 받아 법정 속기사가 될 수 있다. 분당 250단어를 타이핑할 수 있는 기술이 필수다. 일부 주(州)에서는 자격증을 요구하는 경우도 있지만 학사 학위는 필요없다.
