Super bacteria kills 15 patients in Japan

Nine patients have reportedly died after being infected with a superbug or a new super bacteria resistant to antibiotics at a university hospital in Tokyo.

Japanese media outlets reported Sunday that 46 patients have been diagnosed with this super bacteria at Teikyo University Hospital since August last year and 27 of them died but their deaths were not directly linked to the superbug.

However, nine deaths were found to have been caused by the drug resistant bacteria.

NHK also reported that six out of 24 patients have died due to infection of similar superbugs at another university hospital in Aichi

Prefecture this year, fearing a rapid spreading across the nation.

Doctors at the hospitals say the bacterium causes infections such as pneumonia, particularly in people who have a compromised immune system, although healthy people are not infected.

일본 도쿄의 데이쿄대 병원은 지난해 8월부터 1년동안 입원 중이던 중증 환자 46명이 '슈퍼박테리아'에 감염돼 이 가운데 27명이 숨졌으며 9명은 '슈퍼 박테리아'가 사망 원인일 가능성이 있다고 발표했습니다.

또 아이치현의 한 대학병원에서도 올들어 24명이 같은 균에 감염돼 6명이 숨진 것으로 확인됐다고 NHK가 보도하면서 일본 열도에 불안감이 커지고 있습니다. 모든 항생제가 듣지않아 '슈퍼 박테리아'로 불리는 다제내성균은 최근 10년간 세계적으로 급증하고 있으며, 건강한 사람은 감염돼도 발병하지 않지만 면역력이 낮은 환자가 감염되면 폐렴이나 패혈증으로 사망할 수 있습니다.
