“Women go topless and men cover up”

Women in nine major cities of the US will be marching in a National Go Topless Protest on Aug. 22 (local time).

The protest is hosted by Go Topless, a U.S. organization fighting for women’s rights. Women will walk bare-chested in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, Denver, Seattle, Honolulu, and Austin, Texas in honor of Women’s Equality Day, which is on Aug. 26.

Men will also be able to participate. They will cover their chests with bras and bikinis and fight for gender equality alongside the topless women.

The Go Topless Protest was started in 2007 but this year’s rally will be its biggest ever since 2010 marks the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

Nadine Gary, president of Go Topless, insisted that the U.S. Constitution must be changed to include women’s topless rights. She also argued that in order to accomplish complete gender equality, women should not be afraid of being arrested when they are bare-chested in public.

“Why is it okay for men to be topless but not women?” Gary said. “This is sexual discrimination.”

Gary also added not all women would want to go topless. However, women should be given the right to choose whether they want to show their breasts in public or not.

로스앤젤레스, 시카고, 마이애미, 샌프란시스코, 덴버, 시애틀, 오스틴(텍사스), 호놀루루 등 대도시에서 여성들이 가슴을 드러낸 채 시위를 벌인다.

22일 시위에는 남성들도 참여한다. 이들은 여성들이 벗어던진 브라를 대신 착용하고 비키니를 입고는 동반시위에 나선다. 남녀평등사회를 구현하기 위해서다.

지난 2007년부터 '노 브라' 캠페인을 벌이고 있는 주최 측은 특히 금년은 여성들에게 참정권을 부여한 수정헌법 제 19조가 통과된지 90주년을 맞는 해여서 대규모 시위를 계획하고 있다.

'고 톱리스' 사무국장인 나딘 게리는 여성들의 '노 브라'는 헌법에 반드시 명기해야 한다고 목청을 높이며 완전한 남녀평등사회가 실현되려면 여자들이 경찰의 단속을 두려워하지 않고 가슴을 드러낸 채 거리를 활보하는 것이라고 주장했다.
