Maid inherits $6 million from employer
A Filipina maid has inherited six million Singapore dollars (52 billion won) from her late employer after devotedly working for her for 20 years, a Singapore newspaper reported Wednesday.
"I am the luckiest maid in Singapore, with or without the money," the 47-year-old woman identified by the pseudonym "Christine" told the Straits Times in an interview.
The employer, Quek Kai Miew, a medical doctor and philanthropist, died last year at the age of 66, rewarding the maid’s efforts with the cash and a luxurious apartment near the Orchard Road shopping belt.
Christine had also taken care of her mother until her death and was told that she would be a beneficiary of her employer's will when it was drawn up in 2008. "There were no secrets between us. I was not surprised at all when she told me how much I was going to get," the maid recalled.
Dressed in a simple blouse and slacks, she said, "It was heartbreaking for me as I spent more years with Doctor Quek than with my mother.”

Christine, who is now applying for permanent residency in Singapore, said her new-found wealth has not changed her lifestyle.
"I do not really think much about the money I have got. I just live my life as I did before, and not as a rich person," the maid said. "I am still who I was before. I cannot behave differently because I have money now. Even my Filipina maid friends here still treat me the same."
Nearly 200,000 foreign maids, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in affluent Singapore.
20년간 헌신 比가정부 52억 상속 ‘대박’
싱가포르의 한 필리핀 가정부가 자신을 고용한 한 여의사로부터 600만싱가포르달러(약 52억원)를 상속받았다.
지난해 66세로 숨진 쿠엑 카이뮤라는 여의사는 죽으면서 그의 가정부에게 현금과 오차드 쇼핑가 인근의 아파트를 포함한 600만싱가포르달러를 물려준 것으로 알려졌다.
크리스틴(47)으로 알려진 이 필리핀 가정부는 1986년 카이뮤 여의사의 집에서 일한 것을 시작으로 20년간 그의 집에서만 일해 왔으며 그 전에는 그의 어머니도 돌봐 왔던 것으로 알려졌다.
그녀는 21일 싱가포르 일간 스트레이트타임스와의 인터뷰에서 “쿠엑과 보낸 시간이 자신의 어머니와 보내 왔던 시간보다도 길어 지금 쿠엑이 세상이 없다는 게 슬프다”며 “우리 사이엔 어떤 비밀도 없었고 이미 2008년에 내가 상속을 받게 될 것이라는 것도 알고 있었다”고 말했다.
이어 크리스틴은 “쿠엑의 집에서 일했기 때문에 자신은 가장 행운이 있는 가정부”라며 “돈의 유무와 상관없이 나는 평소처럼 행동하고 주변 사람들도 나를 그렇게 바라본다”고 덧붙였다.
싱가포르에는 20만명의 필리핀 및 인도네시아 등에서 온 외국인 가정부가 일하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
