“Corpse flower” blooms
Roses are red, violets are blue ... and then there's Titan arum.
Liver-colored, reeking of rancid animal flesh and obscenely phallic, Titan arum ― affectionately called the corpse flower ― is hardly the stuff of bouquets and love poems. It's more like the Godzilla of the plant kingdom: big, stinky and likely to traumatize small children.
For the next few days, the public can glimpse the monstrous, putrid bud on a Berkeley hillside as the 15-year-old Sumatran plant blooms for the first time.
The plant grows up to 20 feet high and 16 feet across, and, in bloom, gives off as much heat as a human body. The petals spread 86cm wide, and the thick central stamen stands nearly 1.2 meters tall.
Unlike other flowers that rely on bees for pollination, this one counts on flies. It attracts them with the smell of rotting flesh, and they in turn spread its sticky pollen.
The titan arum originally grows only in Sumatra. The plant is also known as Amorphophallus titanium meaning "misshapen penis," due to the shape of the flower.
"This is the horticulturists' dream come true. It's the cleanest form of perfection a flower can produce," said Gary Cromp, a Berkeley gardener who was one of a few hundred gawkers who trekked to the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden Wednesday to experience Titan arum in all its fetid splendor.
시체꽃 15년만에 개화?
미국 캘리포니아주 버클리 '타이탄 아룸(Titan Arum)'이 6일(현지시간)에 활짝 펴 관광객들이 몰려들고 있다.
시체 썩는 냄새를 풍긴다고 해서 시체꽃(corpse flower)이라고도 불리는 이 거대한 꽃은 이날 15년만에 처음으로 개화했다.
런던 식물원에 처음 씨앗이 심어졌으며 전 세계 약 100여 그루만 남아있어 멸종위기에 처한 희귀식물이다. 대부분 UC버클리 대학 식물원에서 자라고 있는 것으로 알려져 있다.
타이탄 아룸은 높이가 6m에 가로 4.8미터까지 자란다. 꽃잎의 직경은 무려 86cm, 중앙에 있는 수술은 1.2미터에 이르는 세계에서 가장 큰 꽃이다.
냄새 또한 지독해 식물원 직원들조차 마스크를 써야할 만큼 냄새가 고약하다. 때문에 방문객들은 일정한 거리를 유지한 채 꽃을 감상해야 한다. 그래도 다행인 점은 계속 냄새가 나지 않고 몇 시간에 한 번씩 냄새를 발산한다는 것이다.
다른 꽃들과는 달리 시체꽃은 파리가 꽃가루를 옮긴다. 고기 썩는 냄새로 인해 벌 대신 파리떼가 몰려들기 때문이다.
일부 방문객들은 만개한 시체꽃을 보며 혹 불길한 징조가 아니냐는 우려 섞인 눈길을 보내고 있다. 가뜩이나 어려운 경제상황에서 이 꽃이 재앙을 예고하는 것처럼 보이기 때문이다.
타이탄 아룸은 인도네시아 수마트라 섬 중부의 적도 강우림이 원산지다. 타이탄 아룸의 학명은 꽃이 피기 전 꽃망울이 기형적으로 생긴 거대한 남성 성기를 닮았다는 뜻에서 '기형음경화'라는 뜻의 '아모포팰러스 타이타늄'이다.
