Actress apologizes for rape remark

Actress Kristen Stewart has apologized for her insensitive comment regarding rape.

In a recent interview with magazine Elle for the July edition in Britain, Stewart seemed to be comparing being followed by paparazzi to being raped, causing a huge uproar.

“What you don’t see are the cameras shoved in my face and the bizarre intrusive questions being asked, or the people falling over themselves, screaming and taunting to get a reaction,” she told Elle. “The photos are so ― I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped.”

The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, a major anti-sexual assault organization, strongly condemned the remark, calling it offensive.

The 20-year-old quickly issued an apology, in which she said, "I made an enormous mistake ­ clearly and obviously. And I'm really sorry about my choice of words." She added, "‘Violated' definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought. People thinking that I'm insensitive about this subject rips my guts out."

Earlier this month, Stewart visited Korea for promotion of film Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment of the popular Twilight series.

'파파라치와 강간' 크리스틴 스튜어트, 죄송합니다

영화 ‘트와일라잇’ 시리즈의 헤로인 크리스틴 스튜어트(20)가 부적절한 단어 사용을 후회했다. 스튜어트는 파라치에게 사진 찍히는 것을 놓고 “강간(rape) 당하는 것을 보는 듯하다”고 표현했었다.스튜어트는 미국 주간 ‘피플’과 인터뷰에서 “정말 명백하게 엄청난 실수를 저질렀다”며 “내가 선택한 단어에 대해 사과한다”고 밝혔다.

이어 “침해당한(violated)이라는 단어가 내 생각을 표현할 더 나은 단어였을 것”이라고 실언을 주워담았다. 스튜어트는 패션월간 ‘엘르’ 영국판 7월호 인터뷰에서 “파파라치에 시달리는 것은 누군가가 성폭행 당하는 것을 보고 있는 듯한 느낌”이라고 발언했다.

그러자 미국의 ‘강간·근친상간 국가네트워크(RAINN)’는 “강간은 단지 개인생활을 침범당하는 것이 아니라 폭력적인 범죄에 해당한다”며 스튜어트의 발언이 부적절하다고 비난했다.

영화 ‘패닉룸’(2002)에 조디 포스터(48)의 딸로 나온 스튜어트는 2008년 ‘트와일라잇’ 시리즈 주인공 ‘벨라’로 발탁되면서 스타덤에 올랐고, 파파라치의 집중 공략 대상이 됐다. 한편, 스튜어트는 8일 개봉하는 ‘트와일라잇’ 세 번째 시리즈 ‘이클립스’ 홍보차 한국을 다녀갔다.
