The Samsung Lions released their injured starting pitcher Denyi Reyes, Saturday.
The Lions said they are close to signing a new foreign pitcher to replace the Dominican-born right-hander, who had been with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club since last year.
Reyes was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot Monday, the same injury he'd suffered during spring training this year.
Reyes was 4-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 10 starts this season before hitting the sidelines.
Last year, Reyes went 11-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 26 outings. But he made his impact during the postseason.
In the second round, Reyes held the LG Twins to one earned run across 13 2/3 innings while winning both of his starts, en route to grabbing the series MVP honor.
Then in the Korean Series against the Kia Tigers, Reyes threw seven innings and gave up one unearned run in the Lions' 4-2 win in Game 3. It was their only win of the best-of-seven series.
The Lions signed Reyes to a new contract in November but decided to cut ties with the 28-year-old with the season not even halfway through.
The Lions entered Saturday's action ranked fourth in the 10-team KBO with a record of 36-30-1 (wins-losses-ties).
