The 14th Cheorwon DMZ International Peace Marathon will take place along South Korea’s northern border Sunday.
Hosted by the Hankook Ilbo, the sister paper of The Korea Times, and Cheorwon County of Gangwon Province, the marathon is set to start at Goseokjeong Pavilion in Cheorwon.
Running along the DMZ course, participants will be given a chance to glimpse the reality of the divided Korean Peninsula. Australian ambassador to Seoul James Choi will challenge the half-course division with other foreign envoys in Korea. Some 340 foreign marathoners will participate at this year’s event.
Comprising four divisions _ full course, half-course, 10-kilometer and five-kilometer _ the course passes well-preserved natural settings and tourist sites, including the former regional office of North Korea's Workers’ Party and Woljeong-ri Station, South Korea's northernmost train station.
This year’s event is supervised by the Cheorwon Sports Association and all participants will receive a three-kilogram package of Cheorwon Odae rice and FASCY hand cream as gifts.
