Ulsan Mobis Phoebus' Moon Tae-young will join the Seoul Samsung Thunders as a free agent, signing a record 830 million won, two-year deal, according to the Korea Basketball League (KBL), Wednesday.
Moon, 37, was released from the Phoebus, the 2014-15 season champions, and the Thunders posted the highest offer to the KBL of 747 million won in annual salary and 83 million won in incentives.
Before Moon, Kim Joo-sung of Wonju Dongbu Promy had the earnings record, having received 710 million won for the 2008-2009 season.
Moon, a Korean-American who joined the LG Sakers in 2009, has been one of the most prolific scorers in the domestic league. After earning Korean citizenship in 2011, along with his older brother Moon Tae-jong, the younger Moon played for the Phoebus from the 2012-13 through last season, helping the team cement its status as one of the league’s strongest contenders.
In the 2014-15 season, Moon appeared in 50 games with an average of 16.92 points, 6.34 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Led by his performance, the Phoebus clinched the pennant and the championship title.
Moon will likely help the sluggish Thunders, who are seeking to rebound from poor showings in the last two seasons. Along with Moon, the Thunders last week signed veteran point guard Joo Hee-jung from the Seoul SK Knights.
