Turtle Marathon set for May 9

Enjoy spring sunshine and crisp mountain air at the 449th Turtle Marathon on Mt. Nam this Saturday.
The event, co-hosted by the Hankook Ilbo, a sister paper of The Korea Times, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, will start at 10 a.m. at Baekbeom Square, located in Namsan Park's Hoehyeon area. Kim Seung-hee, the new minister for food and drug safety, will lead this month's walkathon. The marathon has drawn more than 1.2 million people since 1978.
Managed by the Korea Food Industry Association, this month's walking event doubles as a commemoration of the 14th Food Safety Day, which falls on May 14. At the event, the association will campaign for food safety awareness such as Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP), getting rid of spoiled food and preventing food poisoning.
The six-kilometer course will lead from Baekbeom Square towards the National Theater of Korea, and then back to the square along the Mt. Nam walking trail.
Upon finishing the walk, comedian Lee Dong-yun will host a prize draw. Prizes include tickets to the percussion show "Drum Cat: The Festival" and ISOI cosmetics, among others.
Students who participate in the cleanup afterwards will receive certification for completion of three hours of voluntary work. These students can register at www.1365.go.kr.
