Bae Sang-moon to compete at PGA Tour despite military row

Bae Sang-moon

South Korean golfer Bae Sang-moon will push ahead with his U.S. PGA Tour schedule despite his call for military conscription.

The 29-year-old, top-seeded Korean golfer will compete at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona from Jan. 29-Feb. 1.

The Military Manpower Administration said that a conscription candidate is subject to charges if he does not return home within 30 days after his overseas travel permit extension expires, citing the Military Service Law’s Article 94.

Bae, a two-time PGA Tour winner, acquired his U.S. residency permit in 2013. Earlier this month, he filed a petition for the government to extend his overseas travel permit to continue playing on the PGA Tour, but that was denied on Dec. 29.

He has insisted that he is merely delaying his military duty in order to keep playing on the tour at the peak of his career, and that he has no intention of dodging military service.
