Counfusion About Yu-nas Future

There was confusion Thursday about Kim Yu-na's future after Yonhap News Agency reported that the figure skater could turn pro, based on comments made by Koo Dong-hoi, vice president of IB Sports, Kim's agency ― a report that later turned out to be exaggerated.
When asked by Yonhap whether the figure skater would retire after the Olympics, Koo did not completely rule out the possibility that she could turn professional and said Kim has not said anything about her future beyond the Olympics.
Later, Koo clarified his comments to The Korea Times, explaining that he quite simply had no idea what Kim was planning to do after the Olympics.
``I said I didn't know anything about it,'' Koo told The Korea Times, downplaying the comments. ``I am not Kim Yu-na, so I can't guarantee anything. I said I couldn't completely exclude the possibility that she would retire after the Olympics.
``But I understand how my comments could have caused misunderstanding.''
Kim told reporters in December in Toronto that she would compete in the world championships, regardless of her result at the Olympics and fellow Korean figure skater Kwak Min-jung, who will also compete in the Olympics, reiterated that point at a press conference Wednesday.
There has been plenty of speculation about Kim's future if she wins in Vancouver, as gold medalists often choose to turn professional.
김연아 프로 전향설
연합뉴스가 20일 한국 피겨의 희망 김연아 소속사 IB 스포츠의 구동회 부사장을 인용해 김연아가 프로로 전향할 수 있다고 보도해 큰 논란을 불러일으켰다.
하지만 이 보도는 나중에 과장된 것으로 확인됐다.
구 부사장은 김연아가 올림픽 후 은퇴할 것이냐는 질문에 프로 전향 가능성을 완전히 배제하지는 않으면서 김연아가 올림픽 이후의 미래에 대해서는 언급한 적이 없다고 밝혔다.
구 부사장은 그 뒤 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 올림픽 후 김연아가 어떤 계획을 갖고 있는지 모른다며 자신의 발언을 해명했다.
그는 ``아무 것도 모른다’’면서 ``내 자신이 김연아가 아니기 때문에 아무 것도 보장할 수 없다. 은퇴 가능성을 완전히 배제할 수 없다는 원칙적인 얘기만을 했을 뿐’’이라고 말했다.
김연아는 지난해 12월 토론토에서 올림픽 성적과 상관없이 세계선수권대회에 출전할 것이라고 밝힌 바 있다. 올림픽 금메달리스트들은 종종 프로로 전향하는 경우가 있어 김연아가 뱅쿠버에서 우승할 경우 김의 미래에 대한 많은 추측이 나돌고 있다.
