Wage jobs for youth drop in Q3: data

Korea added 246,000 wage jobs from a year earlier in the third quarter of 2024, but the number of jobs for young people decreased, while the overall growth continued to slow, data showed Wednesday.
The number of paid employee jobs came to 20.79 million as of August, according to the data from Statistics Korea.
It marked the third consecutive quarter the country has seen slower on-year employment growth and the biggest drop for the third quarter in six years.
By age, jobs for those in their 20s and younger fell 146,000, or 4.6 percent, to 3.05 million, and the number of paid job positions for those in their 40s fell by 67,000 to 4.7 million in the third quarter.
Both of the age segments saw the biggest drop since the statistics agency began keeping such records in 2017.
But 274,000 jobs were added for people in their 60s and older to bring the total to 3.78 million, and people in their 50s and 30s also saw paid worker jobs increase by 119,000 and 66,000, respectively.
By sector, the health and social welfare segment had 138,000 more paid worker jobs, while the construction sector lost 47,000 jobs in the third quarter. Hiring in the manufacturing sector rose by 21,000, the data showed. (Yonhap)
