Several teachers' groups called on President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday to step down over his martial law declaration last week, describing his action as "violence" based on hatred and "ostracism."

The Korean Language Teachers Association, comprising school teachers of the Korean language, issued the call in a statement, accusing Yoon of inciting violence based on "hatred" and "ostracism" and threatening punishment for "having different opinions."

"We will fight until the ringleader of insurrection is taken down, and we will pass judgment on those who trample on parliamentary democracy and covet power," they said.

They also urged all lawmakers to give their consent to a parliamentary motion to impeach Yoon and to pursue the immediate arrest of the main culprit and accomplices.

A total of 2,511 Korean language teachers have signed the statement since Tuesday.

Last week, another group of over 2,300 Korean history teachers issued a similar statement urging Yoon to step down immediately.

Additionally, a group called "teachers determined to safeguard democracy" was set to announce a statement in front of the National Assembly later in the day, with over 3,600 teachers having signed it.

"We hope to be teachers who are not ashamed in front of our students," they said. (Yonhap)
