Parents with at least $22,318 in unpaid child support to face identity disclosure, travel ban

Parents who have at least 30 million won ($22,318) in unpaid child support or default on such payments three times or more will be subject to penalties, such as overseas travel bans and driver's license suspension, the gender ministry said Tuesday.
Such punitive measures were made possible as the Cabinet on Tuesday passed a revision to the enforcement decree of the Act on Enforcing and Supporting Child Support Payment. The act, which was revised in March, is set to go into effect on Sept. 27.
Under the revised act, noncustodial parents who continue to neglect child support expenses are promptly subject to disciplinary measures, such as identity disclosure, travel ban and suspension of driver's license, following a court order.
The gender ministry said it expects the number of people under such punitive measures to increase after the revised act goes into effect later this month and the disciplinary period to shorten following the simplified process. (Yonhap)
