Provincial News Migrants join police patrols on Jeju Island

Seogwipo Police Station on Jeju Island has recruited marriage migrant women to join their patrols to enhance public security.
The police received applications from 13 women through the social media last month. The women, who live in the city, are from the Philippines, Vietnam and China. The team will help patrol Jeongbang district once a month.
“We expect the new patrol team to help marriage migrants feel more included in Korean society,” said an official from the station’s foreign affairs department.
“While patrolling, police officers meet a lot of foreigners who cannot speak Korean. The foreign patrol team will help narrow the language gap between the foreigners and Korean police.”
The police plan to recruit other migrant women every year.
An inauguration ceremony was held at the police station on Apr. 27, after which the new members patrolled with police.
