SNU professor named recipient of IT Young Engineer Award

Kwon Sung-hoon of Seoul National University was named winner of the IT Young Engineer Award, a school spokesman said Wednesday.
An associate professor at the department of electrical and computer engineering, Kwon has distinguished himself in bio-microelectromechanical systems (bio-MEMS) and nanotechnology, publishing about 200 papers in major science journals including “Nature Materials.” His papers have been cited more than 3,000 times.
He also established technology ventures including QuantaMatrix, a personalized diagnostics company.
The annual award was jointly launched in 2006 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest association of over 400,000 technical professionals, and the Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers, a local institute which has served as an important source of information and academic exchange since 1946.
The Haedong Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Culture sponsors the award.
The award ceremony will take place today at Ramada Plaza Jeju on Jeju Island. The winner will receive a plaque and a medal.
Kwon graduated from Seoul National University in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and received a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the same university in 2002. Then he earned a Ph.D. in bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley in the United States in 2004.
