Contest underway to promote World Education Forum

By Chung Hyun-chae

The Ministry of Education and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) under the auspices of UNESCO are holding a contest among elementary, middle and high school students in Korea for the promotion of the World Education Forum set for May in Songdo, Incheon.

Contestants are required to submit their work in one of three categories: a poster, photograph or user-created content (UCC). The theme of the contest is “Global Citizenship.”

“We decided to launch this kind of contest in a bid to promote the forum and raise awareness of global citizen education,” said Kim Kwang-hyun, chief of the APCEIU’s publication and public relations team.

The top winner from each of the three categories will receive the Education Minister Prize plus 500,000 won ($453) in prize money. The three winners will also be given opportunities to participate in APCEIU’s international activity program.

A total of 36 students or teams will win awards.

The winners’ works will be displayed at the event hall during the May 19 to 22 forum so that participants from all over the world can appreciate them.

Contestants can participate as individuals. Team participants are only allowed in the UCC category.

Seventeen provincial and municipal education offices nationwide will accept applicants through preliminary competition until April 17. Then they will select three to five finalists in each category, whose works will be sent to the APCEIU. Judges will select the winners on May 7.

“We will screen the works based on how effectively they deliver a message and how well they reflect the theme of the contest,” Kim said.

The winners will be announced on the APCEIU’s website (

) on May 7.
