New broadcasting watchdog kicks off with broader roles

The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) officially kicked off Wednesday with broader roles than its predecessor, part of a pan-government reorganization.
The new body replaces the Korea Communications Commission, taking over its functions as well as some duties from the Ministry of Science and ICT, including oversight of new media and subscription-based services.
"Through the launch, the commission is expected to establish broadcasting and media policies that meet the changing media environment," the KMCC said in a release.
The commission said it will seek to maintain neutrality while serving the public interest.
The KMCC added it will thoroughly review its responsibilities to avoid potential disruptions in its work following the reorganization.
