Lee orders all-out efforts to restore state data center crippled by fire

President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday ordered the government to make all-out efforts to swiftly restore the administrative computer networks and minimize people's inconvenience after a recent fire at the state data center crippled services, according to the presidential office.
Lee made the call at an emergency meeting in response to the government's online services and networks being disrupted by the fire that broke out at the National Information Resources Service in the central city of Daejeon on Friday following a lithium-ion battery explosion.
Lee instructed relevant government agencies to "concentrate all available resources on swiftly restoring the government system and resuming its operation, as well as minimizing the people's inconvenience," presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a briefing.
Of the 647 online systems that the government shut down, 96 systems were directly damaged by the fire. The mobile identification system, online postal service and other state online civil services were disrupted.
The government began resuming the operation of 551 computer systems not affected by the blaze in a bid to review whether the service is operating normally.
Lee also called for close cooperation with the private sector to prevent people from experiencing inconvenience in using services linked to their daily lives, such as financial services, goods delivery and transportation.
He also ordered the government to map out fundamental measures to prevent the reoccurrence of similar accidents, taking the example of setting up a "double-layer operating system" for state computer networks.
"There should be no inconvenience to people during the upcoming Chuseok fall harvest holiday," Lee said, calling on the prime minister, the interior minister and other officials to focus on handling the latest accident.
