President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday shared an article to his X account that reported the new high recorded by South Korean stocks earlier in the day.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 54.48 points, or 1.67 percent, to close at 3,314.53, surpassing the previous high of 3,305.21 set on July 6, 2021.
The index also broke its intraday record high of 3,316.08, set on June 25, 2021, when it surged to 3,317.77 on hopes that Lee may reverse a controversial capital gains tax hike proposal.
The article shared by Lee was headlined: "KOSPI makes new history by closing at highest-ever 3,314.53."
Lee had pledged during the presidential campaign to boost the index to 5,000 points.
In a separate post on X the same day, he renewed his call to prevent deaths at industrial sites, saying the biggest responsibility falls on those who perceive dangers but neglect to take appropriate prevention measures.
"We will come up with a strong punishment system against all those responsible, including businesses and site managers, and do everything to root out chronic practices and insensitivity to safety," Lee wrote.
Noting that labor inspectors carry business cards printed with the warning, "If you fall, you die," he added that he will have the labor minister add the same text to his card to heighten awareness at industrial sites.
