Korea Times, APLN to host essay contest on peace, disarmament

The Korea Times and the Asia Pacific Leadership Network (APLN) will cohost their first essay contest on the theme: “Youth, Disarmament, and Peace in the Asia-Pacific Region.” We invite Korean and international students (both graduate and undergraduate) to submit essays to the contest which aims to foster a new generation of young people committed to the examining nuclear issues.

Applicants should submit their essays in English in about 800-1,000 words, as well as personal information including name, major area of study, year-level, email and phone number. All submissions will be placed in the same judging pool.

The subject of the essay must be chosen from the following three topics:

Topic 1

An analysis of the erosion of international nuclear governance devices such as the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) among others, and prescriptions to revive them

Topic 2

The strategic nuclear rivalry between China and the U.S. as well as newly emerging patterns of a nuclear arms race in the Asia-Pacific region

Topic 3

The North Korea nuclear problem involving an analysis of the current stalemate in negotiations with the United States as well as prescriptions to resolve this

Prizes

Winners of the contest will receive awards from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Korea Times president-publisher and the APLN chairman. They will receive a monetary prize and a certificate in addition to having their work published in the APLN and The Korea Times. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a sponsor of the event.
