The mother of a man who mocked Sewol ferry sinking victims made a public apology on Sunday.

The man, surnamed Kim, 20, posted a selfie last month in which he wore a Danwon High School uniform while eating a fish snack.

More than 300 people, mostly students from the high school, died or went missing after the ferry capsized on their field trip in April 2014.

The posting on user-content website Ilbe Storehouse angered the public. Police detained Kim days after he posted the picture.

“When I was informed of the news, I was shocked,” the mother said in a letter of apology to Yonhap News Agency. “I was dumbfounded, and didn’t apologize to them immediately.”

“I should have apologized right after the incident. “It is my fault because I brought him up in a wrong way. I am so sorry to hurt their feelings.”
