Korean student wins international steel contest

A Korean girl has won the Asian section of an international competition to produce steel at the lowest total cost.

Cho Da-hee, who is studying materials science and engineering in a master and doctorate program at Seoul National University, won the Asia·Oceania regional championship at 9thSteelChallenge hosted by The World Steel Association (worldsteel).

The annual competition aims to foster knowledge about steel for students and employees in the steel industry.

Contestants had to make high-strength structural steel using a computer to simulate the process.

The aim is to develop techniques to produce cheaper quality steel with for use in buildings.

A total of 1,922 people from 34 countries participated in the competition.

The world championship took place in Brussels, Belgium, on Feb. 11 with eight teams of regional champions from the first round competing for the world title.

Chongqing University of Science and Technology and Baosteel Group Corporation, both from China, won the world championship in the student category and the industry category respectively.

Cho graduated from Korea University of Technology and Education and enrolled in Seoul National University master and doctorate program last year. She hopes to work in the steel industry.
