Today is Valentine’s Day, a most celebrated romantic holiday, or so we thought.
A recent survey by marriage agency, Duo, showed that a great majority of those in their 20s and 30s hate the holiday so much so that they wish it would be abolished.
Out of 542 unwed people in that age group, 90 percent of male and 77 percent of female respondents took an anti-Valentine’s Day stance.
More than half of the participants in Seoul said that they object to Valentine’s Day gift-giving.
They felt the pressure from staging a surprise event (37.0 percent), bearing the cost (28.8 percent), and selecting the right present (25.7 percent).
Meanwhile, men said that they spend an average of 86,000 won ($78.44) buying gifts on Valentine’s Day, while women spent 116,000 won ($105.81).
Most men and women picked chocolate as the most suitable gift.
“Rather than excessively spending and making people feel uncomfortable, we hope people spend this special day to express their feelings towards one another to remind ourselves the true meaning behind this time of the year,” an agency official was quoted as saying.
