Grandparents have become loyal customers of the country’s toy shops.
According to online shopping mall Interpark, the number of customers over 50 who purchased toys has increased by 15.2 percent year-on-year in the past two months.
“Grandparents tend to buy expensive toys while younger family members like aunts and uncles go for something cheaper,” an Interpark spokesman said.
Sales of toys priced over 50,000 won ($46) have gone up by 31.2 percent during the same period, the company said. Sales of those in the price range of 30,000 ($28) and 50,000 won grew by 15.3 percent.
The country’s department stores have also seen an increase in the number of “loyal customers,” and the average amount of money spent on toys.
According to Lotte Department Store, the number of customers aged over 50 who spent over 1 million won ($918) on toys per year has gone up by 17 percent last year from three years ago.
