Residents of an apartment complex near Seokchon Lake in southern Seoul have voted to change the name of their street after a drop in the water levels caused safety concerns.
According to Yonhap News Agency, some residents of Lake Place Apartments voted to remove the “Seokchon” from their addresses.
Water levels in the lake fell by some 70 centimeters over the summer. The drop added to safety concerns about the nearby Lotte World Tower, under construction at the time. Sinkholes had also appeared in the area.
In November, residents voted on whether to change the name of the street from “Seokchon Lake Road” to “Jamsil Road.” Some 76 percent of the residents voted in favor of the change.
“Streets are usually named after whatever landmark the building is facing, but if the word ’Seokchon’ is what the residents want removed, we are willing to change it for them,” an official of the Songpa District Office was quoted as saying.
Residents near the new tower in southern Seoul fear that the safety issues will drag down property values.
