Starbucks fans rushed to stores to grab a “lucky bag,” which sold out in three hours on Thursday, company officials said.
Lucky bags, a random selection of goodies worth 100,000 won, were offered for 49,000 won at 670 stores nationwide. The bags contain mugs, tumblers and free drink vouchers.
According to the company, 15,000 lucky bags were sold by 10 a.m. Opening hours vary from 7 a.m.to 10 a.m.
“The special edition mug designed for the year of the sheep was very popular as it was available only in our lucky bags,” a Starbucks Korea spokesperson said.
In an increasingly competitive market, cafe chains have turned to promotional events to lure customers. This month Angel-in-us Coffee launched an event that offers up to 50-percent discounts on a cafe Americano to customers who are “polite” to baristas.
Starbucks Korea has been selling the bags annually since 2007.
The Seattle-based franchise, which opened its first store here in 1999, operates 650 outlets across the country. The company posted 25.6 billion won ($25 million) net profit in 2013, up 35 percent from 18.9 billion won a year earlier, according to data filed with the Financial Supervisory Service.
