Cheongju market roads 'nation's deadliest'

/ Yonhap
Roads near Cheongju traditional market have been confirmed as the nation’s “deadliest roads,” with the worst traffic accident rate, a local newspaper said Sunday.
With six roads, the area in the North Chungcheong Province is known for its complex and particularly long waiting time for pedestrians wishing to cross with the correct traffic signals.
As with all traditional markets, the area mostly attracts the elderly. They often do not wait for the signals, habitually jaywalk and are not always fit enough to dodge oncoming vehicles.
According to the report, there were 39 car accidents between 2011 to 2013, with 40 victims, including one man killed and 25 seriously injured. This is, on average, more than one casualty a month.
The report quoted a Cheongju official saying safety measures would be introduced. But the report also quoted an official at the Road Traffic Authority, also known as KoROAD, saying it was difficult for the local government and police to rein in jaywalkers.
He emphasized the most important thing was to make jaywalkers aware of the dangers.
