One in four rape victims in Seoul is a teen

One in four victims of rape in Seoul is a teenager, data showed Monday, suggesting that teens continue to be a significant target of rapists.

According to National Police Agency (NPA) statistics, a total of 6,364 teenagers were victims of reported rapes between 2011, accounting for 26 percent of all rapes during the time period.

This year alone, teen victims accounted for 23 percent, or 1,044 out of a total 4,446 victims.

The percentage has been similar in the last four years, reaching 26 percent in 2011, 30 percent in 2012 and 25 percent in 2013.

Out of 31 police stations in Seoul, Gwanak-gu reported the most teen rape cases with 362 cases. It was followed by Gangseo-gu (344 counts) and Gwangjin-gu (333 counts).

The statistics were submitted by the NPA to New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) Rep. Jin Sun-mi.
