Elderly women becoming vulnerable to sex crimes

A new report by the National Police Agency (NPA) on Monday showed that elderly women are becoming increasingly vulnerable to sex crimes. Many of these victims live alone and tend to be less likely to report their abuse to police, the NPA said.

The number of rape victims over 60 reached 428 in 2013, more than a 30 percent increase from 2012. There have been 129 such chases through April this year.

In December last year, an 82-year-old woman in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, was raped by a 65-year-old man ― who had been previously charged for sex crimes ― at his home.

In February, a woman in her 80s was murdered in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, after resisting a 30-something man who was trying to rape her.

“We are alarmed by the increase of sex crimes against elderly women and are looking for effective ways to combat these crimes,’’ said an NPA spokesman.
