KBS play-by-play man blasted for slack football coverage

Cho Woo-joong had a rough debut as KBS television’s football play-by-play man. Calling a friendly game between Luxembourg and Belgium, a mighty team that Korea will face in the World Cup group stages next month, Cho showed a shaky partnership with color commentator Lee Young-pyo, a former Korea international. The conversations lacked flow and were devoid of insight.
Lee is a national hero as one of the best defenders to play for Korea. The leash is much shorter for Cho, with angry commentators flocking to online message boards demanding KBS find someone else before the Brazil World Cup starts in June.
With the Cho-Lee partnership getting a harsh reception, the pressure increases on Kim Sung-joo, Ahn Jung-hwan and Song Jong-gook, who will call the World Cup matches on MBC.
Kim is a veteran play-by-play man, while Ahn and Song were part of the Korean World Cup team that made a surprising semi-final run in 2002.
SBS television has hired Cha Bum-kun, the Bundeliga star of the 1970s and ’80s, as its color commentator.
