A student from Danwon High School haphazardly evaded the Sewol ferry tragedy by undergoing a brain surgery a day before the school’s ill-fated trip to Jeju.
According to Kookmin Ilbo Wednesday, Park Jin-su, a second grader who had a relapsed brain tumor from three years ago in early April, received an operation to remove the tumor. It was scheduled on April 14, a day before the school headed to the Incheon dock to board the ferry Sewol.
By the time Park completed his five hour-long surgery, he wasn’t aware of the disaster news, which involved his classmates and teachers.
According the report, Park’s mother first worried that the news may shock him and worsen his medically unstable condition. She informed him of the news several days after the disaster broke out.
Park was the only second grader in the school left out of the trip.
