The prosecution arraigned a policeman on charges of giving out internal intelligence and stealing personal data from a vulnerable citizen, Chosun Ilbo said Wednesday.
Taak, 39, from Seoul Gangnam police station, secretly informed Jeon, a fugitive on run, about ongoing police arrangement on his whereabouts.
Jeon had fled to Thailand to escape prosecution for infringing upon the game industry promotion act. He had contacted Taak in September 2012 to inquire whether he’s still wanted in Korea. Taak slipped him internal intelligence over three separate occasions.
As for his other crimes, Taak was dispatched to a site where a drunken woman was reportedly lying down in front of a hotel in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul in September 2013.
He retrieved her phone, took it to his home, and ransacked her personal data, including her KakaoTalk chats. He also downloaded naked pictures and sex videos stored in the phone.
Taak returned the phone to the woman via Jeon, disguising the theft with a set-up where Jeon pretended to have found her phone. The report said the woman rewarded Jeon 200,000 won for returning her phone.
The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office announced Wednesday they booked without detention Taak for crime of leakage, information communication privacy violation, and dereliction of duty.
