Prime Minister Chung Hong-won has become the target of criticism for having sought a luxury pension to sleep when he visited Jindo to inspect the Sewol ferry tragedy last Friday.
According to the Kyunghyang Shimmun Tuesday, Chung used the pension, a Korean traditional house inside a local theme park located in Jindo Island.
The pension’s one-night cost is known as 100,000 won, the highest rate in Jindo, with other pensions in the area costing around 30,000 to 50,000 won a night.
The report said the classy pension is currently booked full by other lawmakers who have visited Jindo.
There are bitter voices that Chung should have been more discreet about choosing where to sleep, considering families of the missing victims of Sewol tragedy are passing nights on a cold gymnasium floor.
An official from Chung’s office responded that the pension was countryside experience hall rather than a luxurious one. He added the prime minister spent one night in the pension, two nights on a side bed in Jindo County governor’s office, and headed back to the government complex in Sejong City.
