Toddler Joins Mensa at 3

Most three-year-olds are fascinated by cars and trucks. But few can read and remember their number plates like William Potter does.

He can also name most towns and cities in the British Isles ― and has just become one of the youngest people ever accepted as a member of Mensa, according to the Daily Mail of the United Kingdom.

With an IQ of 140, his intelligence is said to be on a par with that of Bill Clinton and, apparently, Napoleon Bonaparte.

``William has a really good memory, once he has seen something he doesn't forget it,’’ his mother Lynn Goldstraw was quoted as saying.

He can already tell the time, understands dates, owns a calculator and has even picked up some Spanish and Chinese from watching foreign children's TV shows.

William was assessed as being in the most intelligent 0.4 percent people his age by educational psychologist Dr. Peter Cogdon.

Mensa only accepts people in the top 2 percent. Dr. Cogdon said: ``William is well within the intellectually gifted range. His highest scores were on information, which is general knowledge of facts, and vocabulary. His reading age is that of a seven-year-old.’’

대부분의 3살짜리 아이들은 자동차나 트럭 장난감을 갖고 놀기 좋아하지만 윌리엄 포트 (3·영국)는 책을 보거나 계산기를 두드리며 공부하는 것을 더 좋아한다. 영국의 일간지 데일리 메일은 스태포드셔에 사는 윌리엄이 최근 멘사에서 실시한 가입테스트를 통과해 멘사회원이 됐다고 보도했다.

아이큐가 140 이상인 것으로 알려진 윌리엄은 클린턴 미국 전대통령과 나폴레옹의 지능지수와 맞먹는 것으로 알려졌다. 그의 어머니는 “윌리엄은 정말 좋은 기억력을 갖고 있다. 한 번 본 것은 결코 잊어버리지 않는다”고 밝혔다.

이어 “2살이 되기 전 이미 알파벳을 읽었고, 최근에는 중국어와 스페인어를 익혀 해당 외국 채널을 볼 수준”이라고 덧붙였다.

이에 대해 교육 심리학자인 피터 콕든 교수는 “윌리엄의 지능은 또래 아이들과 비교해 상위 0.4% 안에 드는 지능”이라며 “특히 윌리엄은 지적능력이 뛰어나며 사실에 대한 일반적인 지식이 상당하다. 독서 수준은 이미 7세 아이와 비슷하다”고 치켜세웠다.

고지능자의 모임으로 알려진 멘사는 비영리 단체로 인구대비 상위2%의 지능지수를 지니면 가입할 수 있다.
