Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja has requested release on bail, allegedly citing health concerns, judicial officials said Friday.

Han filed the request with the Seoul Central District Court on Thursday and a date for the bail hearing has not yet been scheduled, they said.

Han has been in custody since September on multiple charges, including bribery, illegal political donations and destruction of evidence.

She was granted temporary release from detention last week to undergo eye surgery and then requested its extension for health reasons, but the Seoul court rejected the request.

The judicial officials speculate that health reasons may be a major factor in Han's bail request due to her recent surgery.
