A drunk and unauthorized Thai man was caught inside a triple-walled national Air Force airfield in Suwon on Wednesday and handed over to local police.

TV broadcaster JTBC reported Thursday that the man, in his 30s, whose name was withheld, was seen inside the airfield of Republic of Korea Air Force's 10th Fighter Wing in the Gyeonggi Province city at about 8 p.m.

The man apparently climbed the outermost barbed wire fence, the secondary security wall, then the innermost barbed wire fence next to the open airfield. The walls are reportedly more than two meters high.

The airfield runway is the regiment's top security area because it handles Korean fighter jets like the F-5, KF-5 and F-4E.

The suspect had reached the end of the tarmac when an officer saw him. The regiment handed him over to Suwon Nambu Police Station.

Reports said the man gave police different explanations about why he infiltrated the airfield. He said he did it because “someone was chasing” him, but also said he was “trying to find a shortcut to a friend's home.”

Inside the airfield, the man evaded detection by guard posts and security cameras, according to the report. It highlighted the national defense authority's inability to secure its assets even from civilians.

Police believe the Thai likely had help from one or more accomplices because it was nearly impossible to climb the walls singlehandedly.

Suwon police sought an arrest warrant for the Thai, Thursday, on a charge of infringing the Military Installation and Military Facilities Protection Act.
