A “three strikes” law will apply to people accused of date violence.
Prosecutors will incarcerate and send for trial anyone suspected of a third such offense.
The Supreme Court announced the move on Sunday.
The get-tough policy comes after a steep increase in date violence cases, which doubled to 10,303 last year from 6,675 in 2014.
