A chargeable battery-powered hand warmer exploded in a child’s hand, JTBC reported Monday.

According to the report, the boy, 9, bought the hand warmer on the internet four days before the incident.

In CCTV footage, the child carries the warmer and it suddenly begins to smoke. He immediately throws the warmer away and the device burns up.

The warmer used a lithium battery made by a Chinese company, the report said.

The hand warmer is still sold on the e-commerce site with safety statements saying that the battery has been approved.

The child’s mother said she sent the remains of the hand warmer to the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards to investigate the fire’s cause. She is also considering a damages claim against the company that imported the device.
