Sungshin Women's University president Shim Hwa-jin was found guilty of embezzlement on Wednesday and jailed for a year.
Judge Oh Won-chan of the Seoul Northern District Court handed down the verdict, saying Shim is “unlikely to flee, but (I) don’t rule out the possibility that (she) could commit a similar crime again.”
Shim was charged with embezzling 378 million won of school funds between 2013 and 2015.
She is the wife of retired three-star general Jun In-bum, who recently joined the campaign team of Moon Jae-in, the leading presidential contender in the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, as an adviser on defense affairs.
