Migrant sailors working on Korean ships can now take advantage of an improved Korean-government provided interpreter service.

The Korea Seafarers’ Welfare & Employment Center (KOSWEC) said Tuesday it will provide the service to help settle issues for foreign sailors.

KOSWEC chairman Ryu Joong-bin said the authority “aims to stabilize the employment environment for foreign sailors and empower welfare for them through better communication and partnerships between related departments and agencies.”

The service is expected to resolve misunderstandings between sailors and captains due to language problems and help inspectors better examine working conditions.

It will target foreign sailors nationwide to improve their rights as seafarers and migrants.

KOSWEC has been offering an interpreter service in Indonesian, Chinese and Vietnamese.
