A group of 20 citizens from Myanmar held a protest outside the Myanmar Embassy in downtown Seoul, Sunday, to commemorate the death of their leader, Salai Tin Mg Oo.
From 11 a.m. till midday, the group known as “All Ethnic Democracy and Human Rights Network” held the protest and read a statement concerning the civil rights of their country and the death of the student activist who was killed on June 24, 1976.
The demonstrators demanded the government of Myanmar (Burma) admit and apologize for killing him and to stop its continuing war and human rights violations.
They also asked the military to stop interfering in the civilian government, calling for a change to a genuine democracy and freedom from political and economic oppression.
The protesters said in the statement, “We ask the South Korea government and the international community to support our course of democracy movement and effort to transform into a genuine democracy system in Myanmar. Also we ask them to support and help the ethnic victims inside the country and asylum seekers around the world.”
The protest ended peacefully.
