Event designed to incorporate drawing into engineering education
Kookmin University is hosting a convergence exhibition that brings together art and engineering through Sept. 11 to mark its 80th anniversary, the university said Friday.
The exhibition, titled “The Drawing,” is organized by the university’s Convergence and Open Sharing System Future Mobility Consortium.
The event features students from the university’s Department of Automotive Engineering and Kyung Hee University’s College of Fine Arts, along with invited artists, to connect different fields of study and perspectives through drawing.
The exhibition was launched in 2017 as part of a convergence education program that incorporates drawing into engineering education.
By having students directly observe and draw automobiles and mechanical systems, the program has helped enhance their engineering observation skills and spatial awareness.
Over the years, it has evolved into an exhibition that brings together engineering and art, as well as students and professional artists.
This year’s exhibition is taking place at two venues. The first leg of the exhibition is being held at the BODA Gallery of the Incheon Academy of Science and Arts until Thursday, in conjunction with events marking the school’s 10th anniversary.
The exhibition will then move to the Kyung Hee University Museum of Art, where it will run from Aug. 31 to Sept. 11, providing a venue for universities and schools, as well as engineering and art, to exchange perspectives.

“The Drawing is not about drawing well. Rather, it is about carefully observing an object and visually expressing the structures and relationships one understands through that process,” said Lee Dong-heon, a professor at Kookmin University’s College of Automobile and Mobility.
“It is particularly meaningful that the exhibition, which has continued for 10 years, has expanded this year into a platform for exchange involving students from various educational institutions and academic disciplines, as well as artists,” added Lee, who has guided students in preparing for the exhibition.
Celebrating its 80th anniversary, Kookmin University is preparing for its next 100 years under its vision of “A University that Sets the Standard for Higher Education” and its slogan, “Make the Rule, Break the Rule.”
To this end, the university has established its mid- to long-term development strategy, “KMU VISION 2035: EDGE.” EDGE stands for entrepreneurship, digital transformation, global competency, and environmental, social and corporate governance.
The university has also selected eight areas of specialization in which to focus on strengthening its competitiveness.
Among them, design and content, as well as mobility, build on the university’s core strengths in practical design and automotive engineering.
