The top military officers of Korea and Australia held phone talks on Friday and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral security cooperation to help maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region, the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
In the phone conversation, JCS Chairman Gen. Jin Yong-sung and his Australian counterpart, Adm. David Johnston, discussed ways to expand combined drills and personnel exchange, according to the JCS.
The top military officers also agreed to keep up the momentum of defense and arms industry cooperation as discussed between the leaders of the two nations in summit talks held in the southeastern city of Gyeongju in late October, on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Jin thanked Johnston for the Australian military's efforts to help maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula as well as in the Indo-Pacific region and underscored the importance of enhancing interoperability between friendly nations in a stern security environment, the JCS said.
