Interior minister urges speedy recovery from state data center fire

Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung on Monday called for speedy efforts to restore the government's online services hindered by last month's data center fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS), citing progress in the resumption of power supply to the agency's computer rooms.
"The government will pursue a swift and successful recovery (for the NIRS) under the three principles of safety, security and trust," Yun said, presiding over a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
"The recovery process must be expedited, as the power supply to Computer Room 8 (adjacent to Computer Room 7-1 where the fire broke out) has been restored," the minister said.
The NIRS' main data center in the central city of Daejeon burned by the Sept. 26 fire consists of nine computer rooms spanning the second through fifth floors. The blaze originated in Computer Room 7-1 on the fifth floor and the adjacent Computer Rooms 7 and 8 also suffered damage from dust and smoke.
Computer Room 8, which suffered relatively minor damage, has had its power restored after dust removal was completed, the minister noted.
According to the central disaster headquarters, 260 out of 709 online administrative services hit by the fire had been brought back online as of 9 a.m. Monday, marking a restoration rate of 36.7 percent.
It also said that 30 out of 40 first-class online systems had returned to normal, resulting in a 75 percent restoration rate.
