The Cyber University of Korea (CUK), the online university established in 2001, has introduced new majors and cutting-edge teaching technology to adapt to the rapidly changing online learning environment.

For the new academic year in 2024, the university will open the Division of Architectural Engineering in response to growing demand for a professional workforce in sustainable architecture and environmental design.

The division’s curriculum covers the scientific, artistic and technological aspects of architecture. Students are encouraged to acquire related engineering qualifications in the fields of industrial architecture, construction safety, building mechanics and urban planning while completing a degree.

Another new division created for the coming academic year is computer engineering, which features a comprehensive curriculum covering both hardware and software system development.

The division consists of computing systems, network systems and computer programming majors and offers development operation training opportunities, in which students are to manage all stages of a program from development to testing, deployment and operation.

Once completing a degree, students are given a Bachelor of Engineering, which could open career opportunities in the fields of software development, information and communications technology, automatic driving and medical information systems.

The university initiates new approaches to online learning to make it dynamic and effective.

CUK introduced its one-person recording studios at its buildings in Seoul’s Jongno and Seongbuk districts. There, professors can record and edit video lectures independently and communicate with students more easily.

These new studios feature multimedia tools and a chroma-key screen.

Professors can make their recording environments more vivid and engaging by using and manipulating images, videos and sound in the production of their content. Some studios feature a livestreaming function, enabling real-time communication between teachers and students.

The university expects these new recording facilities to free professors from time and space constraints posed by editing video lectures with a technician. By enabling lecturers to become independent creators, the school aims to develop 620 additional online lectures.

Meanwhile, the school is also gearing up its research and development in online teaching and learning.

The school provides workshops and guidelines on effective online teaching, curriculum building, presentation delivery and use of multimedia to its teachers to make their courses more engaging, according to the university.

To provide a wider range of learning opportunities to its students, CUK is in partnership with several private and public organizations, including TikTok, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Software Policy and Research Institute, the Korea Radio Promotion Association, the Korea Metaverse Industry Association, the Korean Institute of Defense Technology and the Broadcasting Content Promotion Foundation.
